Failure Analysis
We specialize in analysing engineering failures and carry out research to help reduce the recurrence of failures, thus extending the reliability of equipment. We have performed numerous investigations and analysis on failure of primary electrical equipment such as:
- • 500kV, 275kV, 132kV gas circuit breakers
- • 33kV and 11kV vacuum circuit breakers
- • 33kV and 22kV gas insulated switchgears
- • 22kV and 11kV switchgears
- • 275kV and 132kV power transformers
- • 275kV, 132kV, 33kV and 22kV voltage and current transformers
- • 132kV surge arresters
- • Capacitor units
The group also performs investigations for mechanical failures such as pressure vessel and boilers,
steam valves, hydraulic pumps, coal classifier cones, conveyor belt system and turbine bearings.
With collective experience of more than 200 cases investigating electrical and mechanical equipment
failures, we offer our expertise in the following tasks:
- • Tear down examination, technical photography and optical microscopy
- • Metallographic analysis to distinguish and characterize damage
- • Metal property analysis to check conformance to material specification
- • Elemental analysis to check corrosion deposits and various type of environmental attack
- • Electrical diagnosis and validation of failure modes
- • Root cause analysis focusing on design, manufacturing, installation, operation, maintenance and other issues
Apart from supporting core divisions in TNB, we also have served external clients in oil & gas and petrochemical industry such as Ethylene in Kerteh and MLNG in Bintulu.
